Tinted Grayscale Images by Barbara Williams

If you desaturate a color image (or open a grayscale image and change the mode to RGB) then each RGB channel has the same contrast information. When you open such an image in Lucis and then select Split Channel mode you can alter each RGB channel separately. Since the contrast information in each channel is no longer the same, the composite image will have areas of color. This is very fun to play with. Below are some examples showing the Lucis settings. I have chosen to show more extreme examples so the image processing is clear. Of course these effects may be made much more subtle.

If you enhance two channels the same you tend to get more primary colors. The colors will vary more if you enhance all the channels a little differently. You can use the Mix With Original Image slider to also decrease the colors.

Click on any image of the pair of trees to see a high resolution version.

1. Original Image. The high resolution version is 3.3 MB.
2. Desaturated Image. I used Image-Adjust-Desaturate in Photoshop to create this image and placed it on another layer. The high resolution version is 3.3 MB.

I duplicated the desaturated image, selected the duplicate layer and then opened up Lucis. I checked Split Channels and unchecked Display Composite Image. Now if you want you can select each channel and see that they are the same. So I just selected the Red Channel and moved the Enhance Detail slider until I had an image I liked, which was the Enhance Detail slider at 119. Then I selected the Green and Blue Channels and entered an Enhance Detail slider value of 119.

So I had an image where I liked the level of detail. Next I checked the Display Composite Image check box. With this boxed checked, now as I select a channel and move the sliders I can see how the composite image changes.

Below are some variations and the Lucis slider settings.

7. Lucis image with the Green Channel enhanced more than the Red and Blue Channels but also all channels enhanced less than 119. The Smooth Detail slider is left at 1 for all three channels. The Enhance Detail slider is set to 203 for both the Red and Blue Channels. The Enhance Detail slider is set to 125 for the Green Channel.

8. Original image of some poppies. The high resolution version is 3.4 MB.
9. Lucis image with the Green Channel enhanced more than the other two and the image was partially color corrected. the smooth Detail slider was left at 1 for all three color channels. The Enhance detail slider was set to 147 for the Red and Blue Channels and set to 39 for the Green Channel. Then I used the Assign Original Image Color slider to assign 60% of the original image's color to the Lucis image. This toned down the image.
Below are some image examples where I am not providing high resolution versions because they are stock photographs. However if you click on the image you can view some image detail. Some of these images have some shadows or other details I would fix using Photoshop but I left them alone because I wanted to show what Lucis alone could do.
